In the Beginning

Welcome back, or if this is your first visit welcome!

We visited the Waterford area in S.E. Ireland some twelve years ago, having rented a cottage and explored by car. Although enjoyable enough due to a family breavement we weren't in the best mood to properly have a good look and explore but over the last couple of years, after recommendations, we decided we'd try again and this was our first real opportunity.

So we booked a ferry crossing, this time through the Caravan Club, saving around £150. We could have used Tesco vouchers but at a cost of over £400 so we thought this was better value.

As usual we brought Bertie home a couple of days in advance to get everything ready before departing home on Monday 9th September.

We planned just to travel to Cairnryan, the Stena ferry port just north of Stranraer in Ayreshire, taking our time and overnighting at a wildcamping spot at Girvan, which is around 20 mins north of Cairnryan. A pleasant enough journey across to Carlisle then up to Gretna Green and a stop at the Old Blacksmiths centre for lunch. This used to be a regular stop for us visiting Scotland and we've seen much development over the years. Now it is a major stop and changeover point for tourist coaches, with appropriate prices - no more casual purchases for us here!

With the weather a bit mixed we headed along the Galloway coast with a short-cut, which wasn't very, through the Galloway National Park in torrential rain. But it dried up as we hit the west coast and we motored past the ferry port to Girvan, eventually settling on a smallish carpark just south of the town with a lovely view over the sea to Ailsa Craig and the Mull of Kintyre.

Our trip is under way!
